The Sounds of Music
El
Pasoan's love their music. Luckily the city offers
music for every conceivable taste, from rock and
country and country and western, to tejano and
classical.
One
great source of music, both classical and jazz, is
the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. The Oldest
symphony in Texas offers several classical concerts
each season under the acclaimed direction of maestro
Gürer Aykal. Sometimes pop music, including jazz, is
performed. Kinder concerts, in December and
February, offer fun filled classics for kids.
El Paso Pro Musica delights audiences with choir
and chamber music as well as classical music dating
back to the Renaissance era. Especially anticipated
are its dazzling Christmas concerts at the city’s
historic Union Depot. The season runs from October
through April.
Bruce Nehring Consorts is El Paso’s professional
singer and chamber players group. They perform from
October through March at the Chapel at Loretto, 1300
Hardaway. Their performances include music from the
Renaissance period to contemporary times.
El Paso Community Concert Association offers 5
performances each season with both well-known
artists and emerging talents.
Festival de la Zarzuela performs at UTEP and
includes folk opera dating back to the 16th
century. This art includes dancing, singing and
spoken recitation in both English and Spanish.
The Opera Co., Inc. is one of the newest
31-passenger trolleys, which can be chartered for
special occasions. The charge is $75 an hour with
three-hour minimum.
