Retail Sales Analysis
Included is a report illustrating gross
retail sales obtained from the
Comptroller of Public Accounts Office
for 1997 and 1998. Comparisons of
changes from year to year are also
included. Overall, retail sales levels
are optimistic, growing more than 3%
from the previous year in 1997. Downtown
sales continued to grow with a 6.06
percent increase from the previous year.
The Eastside (79936) continues to
sustain robust growth at 14.62 percent
and currently comprises 10% of El Paso’s
retail sales. The Cielo Vista (79925)
area increased less than 1 percent over
the previous year. It should be noted,
that more than 25% of retail sales are
sold in this area. Other areas that have
grown include the West Side (79912) area
growing nearly 5 percent from the
previous year and comprising more than
15 percent of El Paso’s retail sales,
Ysleta (79907) with a gain of more than
6.5% percent, and the Country Club
(79922) area posting a phenomenal 98.38
percent gain . Total Dollar Contribution
In terms of total dollar contribution to
growth in gross retail sales, the
Eastside (79936) continues to post
record increased taxable retail sales.
Over $73 million in growth was
attributed to the Eastside. The West
Side (79912) area contributed $38
Million and the Country Club (79922)
area followed with over $34 Million. The
City should be optimistic since overall
most Zip Code areas posted increases in
retail sales from last year. There were
a few areas that posted decreases. |
